- 4 large russet potatoes, peeled and sliced
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 cups shredded Gruyere cheese
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 teaspoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a baking dish.
- In a skillet, heat olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add sliced onions, sugar, thyme, salt, and pepper. Cook until caramelized, about 20 minutes.
- Meanwhile, cook potato slices in boiling water for 5 minutes. Drain and set aside.
- Layer half of the potato slices in the dish, followed by half of the caramelized onions, and sprinkle with cheese. Repeat layers.
- Cover with foil and bake for 35 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 10 minutes until golden and bubbly.
Notes
For extra flavor, add a dash of Worcestershire sauce or a sprinkle of fresh herbs before serving.
