Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound (sausage or beef) ground meat
- 1 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup chopped onion
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 cup bourbon BBQ sauce
- 8 slices of crispy bacon
- 4 hoagie rolls or baguette buns
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese or Monterey Jack cheese
- Optional: pickles, sliced onions, for topping
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine ground meat, breadcrumbs, egg, chopped onion, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly until well blended.
- Shape the mixture into 16-20 small meatballs.
- Heat a skillet over medium heat and cook the meatballs until browned on all sides and cooked through, about 8-10 minutes. Alternatively, bake at 400°F for 12-15 minutes.
- Pour bourbon BBQ sauce into the skillet or a saucepan, add the cooked meatballs, and simmer for 5 minutes.
- While the meatballs simmer, cook the bacon until crispy and toast the hoagie rolls lightly.
- Assemble the subs by layering meatballs with sauce onto each bun, topping with shredded cheese and crumbled bacon.
- Place the assembled subs in the oven or air fryer to melt the cheese, about 2-3 minutes.
Notes
- Consider using ground turkey or chicken as a leaner alternative.
- For a smoky flavor, add a dash of smoked paprika to the barbecue sauce.
- To save time, prepare the meatballs and bacon ahead of time.
